Heavy Equipment

Heavy Equipment Construction Operation (HECO) covers basic construction safety, introduction to site and road layout, identification of heavy equipment, preventative maintenance and proper operation of heavy equipment. Additionally, students will learn basic skid steer, dozer, front end loader, forklift, backhoe, and excavator operation.

Heavy Equipment

The Heavy Equipment Operation program is a one-year course designed to offer students a solid foundation for a career in the construction and excavation industries. 

Topics covered include:

  • basic construction and equipment safety

  • identification of heavy equipment

  • introduction to earthmoving and grades

  • preventative maintenance and basic operational techniques of heavy equipment

Students participate in classroom time and hands-on experiences in the field, as well as field trips to job sites, equipment dealers, and post-secondary schools. Students will work with an excavator, a loader/backhoe, a bulldozer, a skid-steer, and a forklift.  

The program also gives students an introduction to forestry and logging equipment, including a cable skidder, a grapple skidder, and a forwarder.
